Rational Numbers

Learning Objective: Describe and distinguish between rational and irrational numbers

Card Sort Your table will be given an envelope full of numbered cards. Put these cards into groups in the best way you see fit. Be prepared to justify WHY you sorted them the way you did.

Gallery Walk You will each receive 2 sticky notes. Title one “I notice…” and the other “I wonder…” Walk around and look at the way each table sorted their cards. Respond to any table with each of your sticky notes.

Share as Class Each table will read their sticky notes and share how they categorized their numbers. Is there anything you would change?

Notes: Real Number System Examples of Rational Numbers: Examples of Integers: Examples of Whole Numbers: Examples of Natural Numbers: Examples of Irrational Numbers:

Definition Create your own definitions of the following: Rational Numbers Integers Whole Numbers Natural Numbers Irrational Numbers:

Actual Definitions: Rational Numbers: Any number that can be written as a fraction (terminating decimals, repeating decimals, fractions, perfect squares, whole numbers) Integers: Positive and negative whole numbers, including zero (number line) Whole Numbers: Positive numbers on the number line, including zero Natural Numbers: Counting numbers Irrational Numbers: Non-terminating, non-repeating decimals

Reflect! In your own words, explain the difference between rational and irrational numbers. Give examples for both.

Resort Your Cards Now you will resort the cards into either Rational or Irrational Numbers. We will check your work as a class. Then, fill in the graphic organizer with the Rational/Irrational Numbers.
