Seventh Grade Introduction to cells Thomas stinson

Basic information Cells are the basic unit of life Most cells are microscopic

History of cells Robert Hooke discovered cells in the mid 1600s while observing cork under a microscope. He stated that they looked like tiny rows of boxes which he called cells.

Important cell scientist Theodor Schwann & Matthias Schleiden contributed that “ all living things are made of cells” Rudolf Virchow said that “all cells come from cells”

the cell theory All living things are made of cells Smallest living unit of structure and function of all organisms is the cell All cells arise from preexisting cells

Two types of Cells Prokaryotic Eukaryotic

Prokaryotic Cells First cell type on earth Cell type of Bacteria and Archaea No membrane bound nucleus Nucleoid = region of DNA concentration Organelles not bound by membranes

Prokaryotic cell

Eukaryotic Cells Nucleus bound by membrane Include fungi, protists, plant, and animal cells Possess many organelles

Eukaryotic cells
