Dr. Amy Ruopp Townsend Hall 109 LTC 4240 – Art for Children

How do children learn? Creative Play Experimentation-try and try again, reinvent Wondering, discovery, imagination etc. Multimodal investigations Young children make meaning from meaningful play. Youre going to hear a lot about the concept of “The big idea” We will work with four this semester, Identity, relationships, stories and celebrations. They come up with a big idea and then explore it from various perspectives.

What is ART anyway? How do you make creative decisions every day? How can we broaden our definition of Art to include all these juicy ideas from the last page? Art is any act which is meaning making through meaningful making. Its is about process. Kids learn from adults early on about what is important by what we model. If there is little attention to visual literacy, to exploration and wonder, they learn to interact that way. This does NOT serve them in this crazy new world we live in where change is the only constant.

I will not come after you.  Please arrive on time . Assignments

Field Reflections Weebly Reflections: Elementary art and classroom observations in assigned field experience location (outside of class)

Visual Literacy/Visual Research Movie and in depth reflection This semester long project utilizes the iPad or phone as a creative device for telling visual stories and attending to where we put our attention. The four themes of each unit, which serve as big ideas for studio experiences, also guide the visual research exploration thorough the semester. At the end of each unit, a short section of your visual research film will also be due.  You will have a total for four sections which will be assembled into a larger video at the end of the term. Explanations and some work time will be provided during class. This is visual research and is replacing a formal research paper.

Weebly Portfolio Students will initiate and utilize a Weebly website as personal portfolio to hold studio images and reflections as well as additional coursework. This is a professional vessel you can use for future interviews. Craft it well.

Interdisciplinary Lesson design and implementation: Following a similar format our studios take, you will work collaboratively to design and implement an interdisciplinary experience which you will deliver to the class. This is a culminating project, putting to work all you have learned this semester.
