Freshmen Research Paper What is wrong with the 21st Century?

The Prompt Carefully review the source material you have collected. Then, in an argumentative essay that synthesizes at least 3 sources for support, take a position that defends, challenges, or qualifies the claim that we should be concerned about what is wrong with the 21st century. Defend- There is something wrong! Challenge- No, nothing is wrong! Qualify- Some things are concerning, but others are not!

Brainstorm- What do you think? Defend Challenge Qualify What is concerning about the 21st century from our topics we studied? Why is that concerning? Challenge Why are you not concerned? Qualify In what ways are you concerned? In what ways are you not concerned?

Thesis Decide Will you defend, challenge, or qualify? What reasons do you have for choice- You will need 2 These two reasons will become the claims for your argument paragraphs *just like the district assessment Then craft a thesis statement- The 21st century is ____________ because __________ and ____________.

Argument paragraphs You need data for your 2 argument paragraphs. You will find this data from the sources we have read and watched. What sources do you think you will use for your data? Why?

Argument paragraphs continued Claim The use of drones in commercial use requires a shift in legal precedent to ensure safety and freedom in the 21st century. You will introduce your data (quote) with a description of the source material In an article in The Atlantic, Mark Bowden discusses the use of drones in the American military saying, “ Today we find ourselves tangled in legal moral knots over the drone, a weapon that can find and strike a single target, often a single individual, via remote control.” (Bowden). You will have thoughtful discussion of the data. (warrant) Bowden highlights the precision capability of the drone and the regular use of these machines in both the military and commercial markets in his article. The regular use of these machines suggests we have to have laws to protect ourselves from their destruction in the very immediate future.

Assignment- Please craft two argument paragraphs in a Google Doc using CDW structure. You may directly quote, demi quote, or paraphrase your data. You must use correct parenthetical citation for each piece of data. You must get your two argument paragraphs checked off by Mrs. Davis before you may move on to the counter/refutation. This due by Thur/Fri March 12/13.
