LEAGUE UMPIRING 2018-19

Key points to setting standards Cooperation between umpires Control Strategies Consistency of approach Concentration levels

Cooperation What do you need to discuss with your colleague prior to the Game? How are you going to work as a team Using the club Radios

Control What are the tools that you have at your disposal?

Control What is this ladder umpires talk about Clear signals & communication with players Positive body language Empathy Captains Voice talk in short sharp statements Varied whistle tone Correct use of cards. (Discuss)

loo

Consistency of approach Umpires using the same approach Dealing with offences in the same way whistle tone , no more , green , yellow ( decreases the level of player frustration )

offences Stick Blocks The players shout of stick block is becoming as common as the umpires use of First offence. What is and what is not a stick block?

Bad tackle or stick obstruction – timing is key and being in the right position to judge it correctly is crucial to the outcome.

They are playing the ball and not stick blocking. if a players stick is on the ball moving the ball . They are playing the ball and not stick blocking. If it comes of the ball into space towards a tackling stick THAT IS A BLOCK

Offences Aerial Situations Consistency of approach in the umpiring of the thrown aerial. Ball Up and ball coming down Scenario’s We need to remember that when an aerial bounces above waste height it is still treated as an aerial!

Offences Breakdown of play What is break down ? Knocking the ball away at a free hit Physical block or barge to stop a player getting to or using the ball Poor tackle in impossible position to slow play down anywhere on pitch. Defensive bad tackle in the 23 Forward bad tackle to stop quick turn over

Offences Repeated offences A player who receives Two yellows for repeating the same technical offence in a game E.g poor tackles , breakdown ,physicality etc. Gets a technical red match day suspension This is reported as a category D and no further action would be normally be taken against that player Repeated abuse of an umpire having already had a yellow should be a normal red and paper work completed appropriately. Remember that Violence offered is a straight RED

Concentration It is often easier to maintain concentration by splitting the game up into small sections with personal targets that build upon game situations. E.g first 15 minutes setting out the stall Grasping first opportunities to set standards. second 15 ensuring that we keep to our agreed control (radio) last 5 minutes keeping things tight in run up to half time. last 15 minutes being aware of gamemanship that that aims to run down time. Long journeys are a series of small planned short steps.

Am I five metres umpire – always answer him and do it quickly! Help the players – don’t hinder them.
