What is Cinco de Mayo? Cinco de Mayo is a holiday to honor the victory of the Mexican militia over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Although, many people think Mexico got its independence on the 5th of May, they actually got it on the 16th of September.

The Battle of Puebla After gaining their independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico owed a lot of money to Spain, U.S., England and France. France tried to collect their money by invading Mexico City. The Mexican militia fought them off at Puebla.

How do you celebrate? Cinco de Mayo is celebrated by eating traditional Mexican food and beverages, listening to music, and dancing. In some U.S. cities, they have parades and concerts the week before Cinco de Mayo.
