Why Classify? To study the diversity of life, biologists use a classification system to name organisms and group them in a logical manner. Taxonomy: scientists classify organisms and assign each organism a universally accepted name
Assigning Scientific Names Binomial nomenclature: 2 word naming system developed by Carolus Linnaeus Rules: Must either be italicized (when typed) or underlined (when handwritten) 1st letter of the 1st word is always capitalized 2nd word is always lowercase homo sapien = Homo sapien or Homo sapien 1st word is the genus, 2nd word is the species Organisms that are closely related will likely be in the same genus, but not in the same species.
