English and Mandarin – a dual language approach ----- Meeting Notes (5/13/13 09:45) ----- always been a big focus on english as part of NC and EYFS lots of work on mandarin this year now we want to take this work further by using more mandarin in class in activity times/ routines etc. happens now but not structured

How do we teach English in DUCKS now? Class teacher is a native English speaker Follow EYFS in Early Years and National Curriculum from Year 1 onwards Learning Assistants support in class and reinforce learning ----- Meeting Notes (5/13/13 09:45) ----- language of the curriculum in english language of inclusion in playground etc english LA tend to use mostly english when working with the children in small groups

How do we currently teach Mandarin in DUCKS Children in Toddler and Nursery have daily lesson with their Learning Assistant Children in Reception are split into MFL and CNL across two classes and have a daily lesson Year 1 and 2 are split into MFL, MSL and CNL and have daily Mandarin lessons taught by the Primary Mandarin teacher

What do we want to do next? Vision Statement The Dulwich College Dual Language Model Where children learn in an environment rich in both English and Mandarin Today, more of the world’s population is bilingual or multilingual than monolingual. In addition to facilitating cross-cultural communication, this trend also positively affects cognitive abilities. Researchers have shown that the bilingual brain can have better attention and task-switching capacities than the monolingual brain.” Viorica Marian & Anthony Shook The Dana Foundation, USA ----- Meeting Notes (5/13/13 09:45) ----- across all dulwich colleges in china

Our Vision for Your Child   Children at Dulwich will learn in an environment rich in both English and Mandarin, enabling them to move seamlessly between both languages. Within the framework of the English National Curriculum, linguistic development in both languages will receive equal attention and be tailored to meet each child’s individual needs. Children who are bilingual are better prepared to succeed in life. ----- Meeting Notes (5/13/13 09:45) ----- tailored to meet individual needs - will explain a little more in next slide

How will this happen in Early Years? Class teacher will be teaching the EYFS in English Daily Mandarin time with Learning Assistant Class teacher and parents will complete a language plan for each child Learning Assistant will use more Mandarin in class activity times but tailored to each child Learning Assistants will also continue to use English in class activity times The focus for both English and Mandarin will be on developing each child’s language skills ----- Meeting Notes (5/13/13 09:45) ----- language skills - speaking, vocabulary, reading characters through dual language signage focus on questioning in both languages

How will this happen in Year 1 and 2 Class teacher will still plan and teach the curriculum in English Primary Mandarin Team will still teach daily Mandarin lessons Learning Assistant will use more Mandarin in class activity times but tailored to each child according to language plans Learning Assistants will also continue to use English in class activity times The focus for both English and Mandarin will be on developing each child’s language skills ----- Meeting Notes (5/13/13 09:45) ----- including routines etc

Individual Learning Plan At the beginning of the year class teacher and parent will sit down to discuss the language focus needed for the child If a child has a strong mandarin background there will be more focus on English If a child has a strong english background the LA will enhance the Mandarin language development The language of inclusion will still be English The language of curriculum delivery will be English

How are we preparing for this new approach Sue Stinson and Emily Gu are champions for DCS Working with DCB and DCSZ to share expertise Training for all staff from Annabel Parker Goldsmiths College University of London Signage around DUCKS will be in dual languages
