Tuesday, March 26th HW: Answer the Aim in a complete paragraph. Aim: How did the United States attempt to contain the spread of Communism? Do Now: Complete the map handout. What two nations emerged as superpowers after WWII? Identify one way in which their postwar aims differed.

Superpower Aims in Europe United States Soviet Union Encourage democracy/capitalism Gain access to raw materials & markets to fuel booming industries Rebuilt European govt. Reunite Germany Encourage communism Use Eastern Europe’s industrial equipment and raw materials to rebuild Control Eastern Europe Keep Germany divided

Cold War (1945-1991) – continuing state of tension and hostility between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. over differences in political and economic thinking.

Containment – American foreign policy directed at blocking Soviet influence and stopping the expansion of communism.

I believe that it must be the policy of the U.S. to support free people who are resisting attempted subjection by armed minority or by outside pressure. The free peoples of the world look to us for support in maintaining their freedom. If we falter in our leadership we may endanger the peace of the world and we shall surely endanger the welfare of this nation. The very existence of the Greek state is today threatened by the terrorist activities of several thousand armed men led by communists. The British government, which has been helping Greece, can give no further financial or economic aid after March 31. We are the only country able to provide that help.

We shall not realize our objectives however unless we are willing to help free peoples to maintain their free institutions and their national integrity against aggressive movements that seek to impose upon them totalitarian regimes. This is no more than a frank recognition that totalitarian regimes imposed upon free peoples by direct or indirect aggression undermine the foundations of international peace and hence the security of the United States. Greece must have assistance if it is to become a self supporting and self respecting democracy. I therefore ask the Congress to provide authority for assistance to Greece and Turkey in the amount of 400 million dollars for the period ending June 30, 1948.

Truman Doctrine (1947) – U.S. policy of giving economic and military aid to free nations threatened by internal or external opponents.

Marshall Plan (1948) – U.S. program of economic aid to European countries to help them rebuild after World War II.
