The Dewey Decimal System And how to help Starla and Galacto Grade 6 Library Media Webquest Ms. Bakulski Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion

Introduction The year is 2021, and earth has finally made contact with other planets. In fact, aliens have began colonizing our planet. These aliens, the Croutons, are eager assimilate into our society. They are getting jobs, buying houses, and even sending their kids to our schools. In fact, two Croutons, Starla and Galacto, will begin classes here next month! These two have never used a library before, and so to help them, it is your job to teach them about how to find information in the library. Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion

Your Task In order to help Starla and Galacto, you will work in groups to create a “Welcome to the Library” informational brochure that will teach them about the Dewey Decimal System. This packet will include the following: a cover with colorful pictures and word art a brief biography of Melvil Dewey information on each of the ten major classes of the Dewey Decimal system with examples of works found within the class a conclusion that includes the importance of the Dewey Decimal system a bibliography of the websites used to make the brochure This may sound like a lot, but don’t worry! You’re dividing the work up with your group, and I’m here to help you Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion

The Process First, you are going to be placed in groups of five. Within these groups, each person will be assigned one of the following tasks: Dewey Detective One: Your job is to find information on the classes 000’s, 100’s, & 200’s and write a paragraph about each that includes a picture and examples 2. Dewey Detective Two: Your job is to find information on the classes 300’s, 400’s, & 500’s and write a paragraph about each that includes a picture and examples Dewey Detective Three: Your job is to find information on the classes 600’s, 700’s, & 800’s and write a paragraph about each that includes a picture and examples 4. Dewey Detective Four: Your job is to find information on class 900’s and to write a paragraph that includes a picture and examples. Also, you have to write a paragraph on Melvil Dewey and write the conclusion. 5. Publisher: Your job is to put all the information together into a brochure for Starla and Galacto. You will create a brochure with the information the other groups give you and find pictures to help make the brochure look nice. Also, you will compile the finished bibliography.

Helpful Hints Students with the same role should work together at computer stations so they can help each other. When you find a good website, use the Bibliography Worksheet, located in the resources section to jot down the site’s information. Then, give your worksheet to the publisher in your group so they can start the bibliography. All paragraphs must begin with a topic sentence and end with a concluding sentence. Also, they must be 5-7 sentences long.

More Helpful Hints Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation All paragraphs about the classes should have information about what genre is in the class and examples of books found in that class. In order to find those titles, you should locate the appropriate class in your school library. Get up and look around! Don’t forget to Include the title and author in your paragraph. As always, you should have a flash drive with you. This way, you can save your paragraphs as well as any pictures you find related to your topic. Don’t forget to get the information to the publisher when you’re done. You will need to sit with the publisher and help him or her open your file and pictures from your flash drive. Then, you will help him or her copy and paste your information into the brochure before taking your flash drive back. Publisher: While the others are locating information and writing paragraphs, you should be setting up the brochure using the How to Create a Brochure link located under resources. Also, as people give you their bibliography worksheets, you can begin creating the bibliography putting the items in alphabetical order. Work together and have fun! This is a whole-team effort and you have four days to finish with presentations on the last day. That should be plenty of time to finish as long as you share information and stay on task Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion
