WHAT IS THE STONEHENGE? Prehistoric stone circle monument Historical speculations: Cemetery Temple ‘Computer’ for lunar and solar eclipses Monument Etc.

HISTORY (1) Built in six stages between 3000 and 1520 BCE: Stage I (3000-2935 BCE) Stage II (2640-2480 BCE) Stage III (2470-2280 BCE) Stage IV, V and VI (2280-1520 BCE)

HISTORY (2) During transition from the Neolithic Period (New Stone Age) to the Bronze Age. Incomplete Stonehenge  Roman periods, medieval periods and ground-digging. The name (probably) derives from the Saxon stan-hengen, meaning “stone hanging” or “gallows”.

STONEHENGE TODAY Very famous stone circle! Visitors: a million people a year… Summer Solstice celebration 1986: designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
