Bell Activity September 27, 2017 You know the routine What process allowed stronger steel to be mass produced? What kind of housing did companies provide their workers? What is an example of a rural area and urban area?

Today’s Agenda September 27, 2017 Continue Industrial Revolution unit Standards and Objectives Vocabulary Review Technological and Scientific Advancements Louis Pasteur Thomas Edison

Standards and Objectives September 27, 2017 Standards and Objectives Unit: Industrial Revolution, 1750-1914 Standard W.10 – Explain how scientific and technological changes and new forms of energy brought about massive social, economic, and cultural demographic changes including the inventions and discoveries of James Watt, Eli Whitney, Henry Bessemer, Louis Pasteur, and Thomas Edison. Objectives: I can explain how scientific and technological changes brought massive societal changes. I can analyze the inventions and discoveries of James Watt, Eli Whitney, Henry Bessemer, Louis Pasteur, and Thomas Edison.

Vocabulary September 27, 2017 For the vocabulary tab in your binder Pasteurization – process of killing bacteria in a liquid by heating it. Anesthetic - a drug that reduces pain Radioactivity – energy released by elements when they break down

Recap (Do Not Write) September 27, 2017 Boom Towns spring up around coal mines and factories. Companies provide shoddy housing for workers. Bessemer Process allows stronger steel to be mass produced Steel is used to build railroads and skyscrapers creating the modern city. Improvements in sanitation decreases death and disease in cities.

Power Source September 27, 2017 Early power sources of the Industrial Revolution were water, coal, and steam. Scientists had conducted experiments on electricity. No one developed a way to harness it for use. English chemist Michael Faraday discovers magnetism and electricity connection. Creates the dynamo which he used to power a motor. His discoveries lead to the development of generators.

Edison’s Lightbulb September 27, 2017 Inventors tried to develop a usable lightbulb. Thomas Edison developed the first usable light bulb in 1879. Edison also made: Generators, motors, sockets, etc. Edison developed citywide electrical grids and a power plant for New York City. Electricity made life more convenient. Cheaper and safer option Eliminated steam engine and water in factories.

Travel and Communication September 27, 2017 Travel and Communication Steam ships and trains allow for faster travel. Access to more products Automobile developed for personal use. Carl Benz and Henry Ford Ford’s Model T is mass produced making it affordable. In December of 1903, the Wright Brothers fly. Leads to faster travel and fighting wars. Telegraph, Telephone, Radio, and Phonograph Increases speed of communication Radio is wireless Radio and phonograph allow music to be available to everyone

Medical Advancements September 27, 2017 Louis Pasteur showed the link between microbes (germs) and disease. He discovers bacteria in the air causes fermentation. Develops pasteurization which destroys bacteria by heating liquids and food. Pasteur continues fighting deadly diseases. Develops vaccines for livestock anthrax and rabies. Modern hospitals built Anesthetic used to reduce pain during surgery. Antiseptic used to clean wounds and surgical tools. More doctors and nurses trained.
