C. States Rights Southerners wanted the states to have more power, specifically in determining slavery in states. Which documents did they use to support their ideas? They soon felt they were losing their states rights to determine this. “The Election was not the Cause [of secession] it was but the last feather which you know breaks the Camel’s back. Sectional hostility manifested in hostile legislation by states and by raids of organized bodies sustained by Contributions…of northern Society furnish to us sufficient cause…” Why did the South secede according to the author? What do you think he means by “raids of organized bodies”? How is this an example of the Southern states losing their rights?
