CONSEQUENCES FOR STUDENTS WHO DISOBEY OR QUESTION RULES New Classroom Rules You may not communicate with other students without the teacher’s permission You may not get out of your seat for the entire class period You may not sharpen your pencil, blow your nose, or use the restroom while class is in session You may only speak to Miss Lesniak if asked a question by her You must be prepared for class. If you are not prepared, you will not participate. You must follow all directions and assignments from Miss Lesniak without question. CONSEQUENCES FOR STUDENTS WHO DISOBEY OR QUESTION RULES AUTOMATIC DETENTION

DID YOU HONESTLY THINK I WAS SERIOUS?

Journal Write about the emotions raised by this exercise for 10 minutes or so. How did it make you feel about me, your teacher and new tyrannical leader? What was the worst part of this exercise for you? What would you have done if this was true?

Group Discussion Share your writing with your group Discuss some of the freedoms students (and citizens in general) are granted. What freedoms or rights are you denied? Who controls the system(s) that govern us? How do we fit into that system?

Class Discussion What happens when the power to govern gets into the wrong hands? 1984 is an example of everything that can go wrong when too much power is given to one group over one another.
