Joachim Maes European Commission, DG Joint Research Centre, Ispra An indicator framework for assessing ecosystem services in support of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 Joachim Maes European Commission, DG Joint Research Centre, Ispra

Conclusion This paper demonstrates that there is potential to develop a first ecosystem assessment on the basis of existing data if they are combined in a creative way.

Conclusion However, substantial data gaps remain to be filled before a fully integrated and complete ecosystem assessment can be carried out.

Non-conclusion The MAES process lacks scientific rigour

Integrated ecosystem assessment: condition and services We need a working definition for ecosystem condition based on policy targets

Integrated ecosystem assessment: condition and services Several approaches Mapping the evidence Detecting spatial congruence Narratives and theoretical exercises (matrix) Measurements

Why mapping is essential: Ecosystems, ecosystem condition, ecosystem services and benefits of ecosystems are not equally distributed over space (and time)

Conditions are favourable WG MAES (reports) OPPLA (OpenNESS & OPERAs) ESMERALDA and other FP7/H2020 projects National MAES assessments Art.17 and environmental reporting JRC, EEA (mapping and assessment at EU level) KIP-INCA 28 May 2019
