Environmental Science Lab 110 Yurika Kato Brush creek report Environmental Science Lab 110 Yurika Kato

Why do we do this?????? Purpose! To present and interpret all the Brush Creek field data in an organized report Determine the water quality of Brush Creek from the data collected Data Dirty creek?? Healthy creek??

Scientific method! what is this??? Theory Observation Hypothesis Experiment Law Remember? We created own hypothesis in Lab 6! We should make a report to share the outcomes! WHAT is the difference between observation and a hypothesis? Bresh creek field trip! What is a theory? Define scientific law? Observation: A truth known by actual experience or observation. Hypothesis: A tentative explanation for the occurrence of an observation. IT IS THEREFORE STATED AS A QUESTION. Combination of various laws A hypothesis that is repeatedly verified as correct through time, with varying circumstances.

How to write a report??? I don’t know!!!!!! What do we need??? Very Simple!!!! 1. Introduction – Site description, site history, and your purpose of study 2. Methods – Explain! How did you conduct your tests? 3. Results – Describe results of tests 4. Discussion – Discussing the significance of your results 5. Conclusions – Summarize 1, 2, 3, and 4 and state whether the stream is healthy or not 6. Reference – Your citations!

Before start writing….. Make sure you are using correct format!!!!! In the academic world, using regulated format is very important! Double Spaced 12-point font Arial, Times New Roman, or Verdana font 5 page long (excluding figures and tables)

In the end, you should have report like this!!!!! Cover page Introduction – site description Methods Results Discussions Conclusions Tables, charts, graphs, or figures Resources and references

Do you want to know how do I grade???? Right????? Please include everything!!!! Missing something? Well, I cannot give you points!!!! Cover page/title 5 Introduction 10 Methods 15 Results 20 Discussion 20 Conclusion 10 Spelling, grammar, and punctuation 5 Clearly written and logical 5 Understanding displayed 5 Reference section and cited 5

Let’s talk about your report Do you know the purpose of this report? - Yes!!!!! Ultimately, WE WANT TO KNOW CREEK HEALTH!!!!! Do you know what do you need to include in your report? - If you don’t know, click here Do you know what format you need to use? - If you have no idea, click here

Cover pageeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Easy yay! Report title – You can create your own title! Something related to your hypothesis. If you are looking at the relationships between algal bloom and Dissolved Oxygen, you may want to have title like “Effect of the dissolved oxygen level on algal bloom in Brush Creek, Missouri - water quality report” Your name Date submitted Instructor’s name (Yurika Kato)

Okay…start with 1. introduction. What information Do I need to include? This is your first page! You want to reader to know what this report all about! Right? So….include Overview of the project (What you did) Site description (History) Your hypothesis You can also include…. Maps or pictures of the site!

Next! Here we go!!! 2. Methods part!!!!! Describe all the tests you performed at the filed trip -Discharge, Macro- in vertebrate, chemical component, and visual stream survey 1. Why the test is an indicator of water quality 2. How you performed the test Use your own words! Do not copy from the materials!!!!

2.1 Brush creek data You must have…. 1. Discharge 2. Macro-invertebrate 3. Chemical (Dissolved oxygen etc…) 4. Visual stream survey If you don’t have, ask your teammate!!!!

3. Results!!!! In this section, you state the results of your tests and only the results. Data needs to be presented first in paragraph form with tables/charts ONLY used to clarify. Please begin with words like…. Ex: Results of the test was shown in the figure 1. From this figure, you could know that there was certain decrease in dissolved oxygen level.

4. Discussion!!!!! Let’s discuss Here your hypothesis comes! Let’s discuss your hypothesis! Does the data support your hypothesis or not? If yes -> My hypothesis was supported by the data we collected in Brush Creek. This outcome was not only supported by the data but also the outside sources. EPA tested this for….. If not -> Why your hypothesis was refuted. Find your reasons! My hypothesis did not supported my hypothesis. This results showed that there was no relationships. From the article published in 1978, this two variables certainly had relationships. Possibly, data was not collected right way. Make mistake collecting data? It was better using this method to test these variables etc…. you interpret what the data results imply about the water quality of your site. You will need to refer to the Brush Creek Web-Lab, handouts, and additional resources in order to interpret and describe the results. Research Research Research!!! If you love this process, GO ACADEMIC!!!!!

5. Conclusion! You got there!!! Summarize everything!!! Brush Creek is relatively healthy or unhealthy???? Your hypothesis was supported or not supported??? In the end… Difficulties encountered while collecting data for the project, and include any suggestion on how to improve on these. Include any suggestions you may have on how to improve the water quality of Brush Creek. Always ask yourself WHY????

Last page! Ya? 6. references Very important to reference any source you use to interpret and present your data!! Have you heard of APA and MLA format??? NO, I have no idea what are you talking about???? -> click here YES, You gotta be kidding me! I know this!!!! Just trust me. -> Keep going girl! Kato, Yurika. (2016). Sample Citation for The Brush Creek Project Report. Journal of sample. 4(1), 61-62. In the context, you may write like “Kato (2016) referred …..”

In the very last….. Don’t forget to include any one of these… Table 1. Data X and Ydata Don’t forget to include any one of these… 1. Figure 2. Table 3. Graphs 4. Charts Don’t forget to label them!!! For example….There are rules! Did you know????? Figure-> label has to be below image Table -> label has to be above table Figure 1. Mountain in XX state

And…More details…. Water Chemistry - identify results of all water analyses. Fecal Coliform - explain the significance of the fecal coliform counts with respect to possible health effects. Macroinvertebrate counts - give a brief description of what was found and how this might be related to discharge, water chemistry, and seasonal variations. Visual Survey - Explain how the surrounding land use(s) might influence the discharge, chemistry, bacteria and macroinvertebrates. Variability in data - discuss whether there are variations in data from team to team and week to week. Describe any potential errors that may have caused variations.
