Industrial Revolution Effects

The Industrial Revolution was first marked by a population explosion (1750-1914) Population went from 140 million to 463 million Agricultural Revolution helped, but so did advancements in medicine, public sanitation Very few wars Population Explosion

Problems in Cities People flooded into cities Poorly built homes Poor water system No sanitation system Diseases were everywhere Problems in Cities

Working in Factories Wages were low Whole families had to work Long work day Fumes from machines Noise from machines No safety devices Working in Factories

Responses People began to call for reform Workers began to smash machines due to terrible working conditions (Luddites) Many uprisings led to violent riots Parliament began to investigate working conditions Factories and mines Responses

Parliamentary Acts Factory Act 1833 Mines Act 1842 10 Hours Act Limited the working day for children Mines Act 1842 Women could not be hired Only boys at least 13 years old 10 Hours Act Women and children could only work 10 hours Parliamentary Acts

Results Workers began to for unions Ultimate gal was to gain the right to strike Between 1870 and 1914 things improved Better wages and working conditions Workers had more spending money This was a benefit for all Insurance companies for workers developed Governments began to improve city life Water and sewage systems Housing standards Life was getting better Results
