Ailie Fan Study Links International Ltd. Going to China Ailie Fan Study Links International Ltd. Nihao!

About Study Links About Me Bradford company – we speak 9 languages! Look after international students (65% Chinese) who study in the UK Help schools understand China Help companies understand China Half English, Half Chinese Aged 12, first went to China to learn Chinese and Kung Fu Went to a Chinese university Go to China every year

Where is China? Talk about comparing China size to Europe: about the same size. How long it takes to get there: By plane (flight from Manchester – 12 hours to Beijing), 8 hours time difference -infront.

About China China is very big and diverse, with a huge population Some areas are richer or more expensive than others Some people in China are now very rich and can afford to buy foreign products and services The red bits are the richest areas. Lots of people from the poor areas move to the rich areas.

Some Key Cities in China Bradford population is: ½ million Chengdu population size: 14 million Considered as not the main cities in China, they are still huge markets.

Going to China – for business Visit China to understand them! Be prepared! Respect their culture! Use a translator Employ a Chinese manager Always beneficial to go to the place you want to do business in; you can then understand your customer better. You need to prepare well before you go and get the right visa You need to be respectful when you meet Chinese people. Pay attention to the Chinese culture and their way of doing things You will need your own trusted interpreter To make faster progress, search for a Chinese business partner or employ a Chinese manager Saying things in Chinese (e.g. hello, how are you, thank you, good bye) makes things easier! Shows willing.

Going to China – for fun! Great shopping Long journeys Impressive hotels…. And not so impressive ones! Diseases? Hungry vegetarians! From Bradford to London – 2.5 hours by train From Chengdu to Beijing – 14.5 hours by train Be prepared for long domestic trips – people underestimate the distance between cities. Great shopping You will find the hotels more modern than many in the UK! Some inland cities are less modern You need to ask your GP about any health considerations Watch out if you’re a vegetarian! – there’s a Chinese saying: The Chinese will anything with 4 legs, except a table!

The Great Wall All over the world, people know what this is. It’s the traditional side of China and shows it has an ancient culture. This is what people think of when they think of China.

The Terracotta Army This is another popular tourist destination. Scale of warriors Wayne studying there

The countryside China still has extremely large areas of land which are like this. Very poor farming communities. But most people aspire to be rich and modern, and therefore aim to move to…

Shanghai Pudong New Area Big cities like Shanghai. People in England don’t often think of China as being like this. Very modern, rich, and technologically advanced.

Modern Factories The quality of goods in China has improved tremendously over the past 10 years. They can now compete in all industries, and are relied on to manufacture high quality goods for other countries.

International Shops Not only are companies manufacturing in China, many companies (including European) have seen many opportunities in China to sell to China and have set up businesses there e.g. IKEA, B&Q, Tesco. But it’s not that easy: both B&Q and Tesco are reducing their shops because they have struggled to tap into the market. You need to understand the market, and position your products and your brands well.

Poor Middle-class Super-rich! Shopping in China Poor Middle-class Super-rich! China has moved from shopping in local markets, to massive multi-storey shopping malls in cities. China has many types of consumer markets. The poor, the middle-class, and the super-rich. Chinese and international companies are competing on all levels (even local markets have imported goods!). PHOTO: Small village shops, luxury goods

The (very) rich consumers

Hospitality Be polite! Food and drink etiquette is very important! Whether you are going to China, or if you have visitors to the UK. You need to have a general understanding, otherwise you can easily insult people. E.g. how to cheers glasses; sharing food; who pays; trying food.

Appealing to Chinese Consumers Pay attention to culture: Education Family Health Safety Brands Colours Numbers Language Such factors can influence their buying decisions All aspects to consider: 888, 4 (building floors) Milk formula – importing Family – one child policy therefore importance of each child Brands – social status. Colours – red (lucky); white (death)

Don’t forget… China is BIG China is developing quickly Chinese people are smart China is BIG - there are lots of markets! China is developing quickly - it is always changing Chinese people are smart – respect them, and their culture

谢谢 (xiexie) Thank you!
