The Classification and Division Essay Writers like teeth are divided into incisors and grinders. - Walter Bagehot ENG 101

Find a partner who is not part of your group! Today’s Peer Edit: Mixed Edit Be sure you write your name on the paper you are editing! Find a partner who is not part of your group!

Praises (make a highlighter key) – Highlights Only Today’s Peer Edit: Mixed Edit Be sure you write your name on the paper you are editing! Praises (make a highlighter key) – Highlights Only Questions (make a highlighter key) – Write Your Questions in the Margin Concerns (make a highlighter key) – Highlights Only At the end of the paper tell the writer THREE strengths s/he has in this piece! At the end of the paper tell the writer THREE composition areas that need more attention.

Body Paragraph Analysis Find a new partner at your table – it cannot be someone who is part of your group! Have that new partner choose one body paragraph to analyze – that person should write his/her name in the margin. Your new partner needs to read that paragraph.

What we are looking for in a strong body paragraph: Is the name of the category in the topic sentence? Does the category have a snappy title? Is there a clear definition for the category in the first or second sentence? Does the paragraph include two clear examples? Circle those examples. A body paragraph cannot have a quote/paraphrase as a topic sentence or a concluding sentence – if it does, please draw a line through the sentence. Is the last sentence a summation and transition? If not – write that, if it does – put a squiggle line over the summation and highlight the transition.

Self Edit – I would go through this on your own to ensure you have all the structural requirements met!

Structural Elements Heading Information? Are all the names in alphabetical order by last name? Proper header? All the last names again, in alphabetical order? And ½ an inch down? Did you capitalize ENG and add your section number? Everything double-spaced? No extra spacing between paragraphs?

Is your title spectacular? Does your attention getter woo your reader? The Essay Is your title spectacular? Does your attention getter woo your reader? Is your purpose obvious within your introduction? Do you have 5-7 sentences for your intro and conclusion paragraphs? 7-10 sentences for your body paragraphs?

The Classification Structure – Do you have it? Throughout your essay do you provide a detailed description of your categories – through the use of oodles of description? It is very important that you continue to show and not just tell – look at boring and lifeless words and choose which ones you can develop and give a more dynamic feel! This will add to the overall paper!

Works Cited and Parentheticals Do you have your 3 quotes? 2 paraphrases? Do all your quotes have lead-ins? Do you have 10 vocab words? Is your punctuation flawless with your PD: “blah” (Smith). Is the last sentence of each paragraph in your own words? Are topic sentences void of any PD? (They should be! Topic sentences cannot be quotes, paraphrases, or questions!)

Just a Pinch More . . . . Do not start sentences with: however, moreover, therefore Don’t start sentences with: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet! This paper is in third person – so no: I, you, we, us, our, me, my, mine . . . Or any variation!

Just a Pinch More . . . . Where in your paper do you make this applicable to your peers? Where do you show this vein of pop culture is influencing your peers? Is it clear? It should be!

Two final things: First, SYNTHESIZER: Use the transitions handout to help smooth out the essay! Be sure the writing is cohesive both with the writing and the voice! This is tricky! So do give this some attention!

Two final things: Second, don’t forget you will turn in on Friday your 200-250 word reflection. This is only submitted to turnitin! What you need to discuss is on your Classification Group Paper Handout! 

Get back with your group! Share your feedback! Did you TRULY meet your TTAPP? What changes do you need to make before you submit your final draft?

Turnitin.com is open and ready for your submission!
