Wrt 205: critical research Dr. Rusty Bartels Friday, March 8th, 2019 Week 8, Day 3

Overview Zeffiro Point 1 Point 2 Wrap-up

Zeffiro I wanted us to read this for two reasons: [1] to see how another researcher reflects on method, methodology, and having to change their approach(es) [2] to see how he comes up with a non-essay genre of a product that is directly informed by his subject of inquiry

Zeffiro Uncertainty “While it is crucial to devise a research plan, and acquire a sense of one’s research context, it is also necessary to allow for a margin of change and/or uncertainty.” Immersion “To be positioned in a particular research space, is to be situated within a specific historical, cultural, and social context.” Collaboration “A researcher speaks through their informants, and is cognizant of their own situatedness.” (Ethical considerations)

Zeffiro, Freewrite Choose (at least) one of the three characteristics Uncertainty, Immersion, Collaboration With that characteristic in mind: [1] reflect on how you understand that characteristic through Zeffiro’s discussion [2] connect/apply that characteristic to your own research process at this point in time Form groups of 2-4 and each group will share out their discussion

Zeffiro Focusing on Zeffiro’s product In Groups of 2-4 Describe what you see in the images Describe what you read in Zeffiro’s discussion What do you notice? What stands out to you? What questions does it generate? How do you connect this to research practice, research methods, and/or research product?

Wrap-up Today we: Research process and making changes and adjustments Considered non-essay forms of communication Next time: Spring Break! Monday after break: workshop on research If you haven’t turned in Short Response 3, you have until beginning of class on Monday 3/18.
