Mixtures

A mixture is: A physical blend of 2 or more components (variable composition) Can be separated by physical means.

Mixtures are broken up into two major types: Homogeneous Heterogeneous

Heterogeneous mixtures are: Made of 2 or more phases (a phase is a distinct part) Not uniform in composition

Examples of heterogeneous mixtures include: Oil and vinegar salad dressing Raisin Oatmeal

Homogeneous mixtures are: Mixtures where the composition is uniform throughout. Also called a solution

Examples of homogeneous mixtures: Solution of salt water – contact lens solution Kool-aid

When talking about mixtures, the term phase is: Any part of the sample with uniform composition and properties.
