Cold War Decision Making Pg. 7
Essential Question How should the US work to stop the spread of Communism after World War II?
Decision 1: Greece
Decision 1: Greece Correct Decision: Reasoning: C: We should immediately send our Greek allies military and economic aid. This will give the means to defend themselves. No U.S combat troops should be sent. Reasoning: We cannot fight Communism in every part of the globe, we must help countries to become stable and thus protect themselves.
Decision 2: The Marshall Plan
Decision 2: The Marshall Plan Correct Decision: B: We should help only our allies in Europe with food and money. Their economies need to be rebuilt so they can withstand communist aggression. The estimated cost for helping our allies is $7 billion. Reasoning: By refusing to give money to Communists it will incentivize countries to become Capitalist and become allies with the US.
Decision 3: Berlin 1948
Decision 3: Berlin 1948 Correct Decision: Reasoning: B. We can supply the city with food and fuel using airplanes. Hundreds of planes can fly round the clock bringing in everything the city needs to survive. We should warn the Russians that force will be used to protect the supply planes if they attempt to interfere. Reasoning: The US does not want to be seen as taking aggressive action towards the Soviet Union. We do not want to be “baited” into starting a war. We will supply the people of West Berlin and force Stalin to stop us if he wants.
Decision 4: NATO 1949
Decision 4: NATO 1949 Correct Decision: Reasoning: C: We should form military alliances with all our European allies and Canada. The philosophy of the treaty alliance should be “an attack on one is an attack on all.” Reasoning: The US feels that the only way to stop the spread of Communism is by having a united front against it. Each allied country must work for the good of the rest of their allies in the fight against Communism.
Decision 5: Korea 1950
Decision 5: Korea 1950 Correct Decision: Reasoning: A: The attack on South Korea is clearly a violation of the United Nations Charter. We should take the aggression to the U.N. and try to get that world body to act against North Korea. The Soviets are boycotting the U.N. so the will not be able to exercise their veto. Reasoning: The US wants to appear as though they are not acting alone against Communism. The UN does vote to send troops to aide South Korea but the troops are nearly all US troops.
