WIE Region 1 Report Denise Griffin Region 1 WIE Coordinator denisegri@alumni.tufts.edu Region 1 BoG Meeting Nashua, NH 10 June 2017

Region 1 WIE Focus Collaboration Within Region 1 (26 WIE affinity groups) With Other Regions Joint Meetings with Technical Societies Relationships with Industry

Collaboration Within Region 1 With other Regions Held Conference calls and exchanged emails with various affinity groups in the region Make nearby groups aware of local meetings (e.g, if Boston is having a meeting, let NH know) With other Regions Joint event between R1 and R2 is being planned for December 2017 in Baltimore – IEEE WIE Forum Involves many months of planning by a steering committee which is made up of members of both regions and both men and women (hello, Charles and Bob P.!)

Collaboration (cont) WIE ILC Event Reached out to WIE Canada Attended WIE ICL for 3rd year in a row Networked with companies at Career Fair to establish relationships and encourage participation at other events Interacted with WIE members from several other regions to share best practice ideas and brainstorm Reached out to WIE Canada They are interested in partnering Informed them about the upcoming WIE Forum Will tie in the technical societies to this partnership

Joint Meetings with Technical Societies Affinity groups hold joint meetings with technical societies Topic of the meeting is either technical or “soft skills” Speaker can be from WIE, technical society, or invited from industry Held at local industry/academic locations including MITRE, Analog Devices, MIT Lincoln Labs, Boston University, Tufts, etc.) Advertise the meeting jointly The technical society and WIE both get “credit” for the meeting Companies like diversity aspect and willing to host the meeting E-Net cruise is an example of an even that IEEE WIE Boston participates in every year – growing event

Relationships with Industry This is HUGE. This is how we will attract new members to WIE and IEEE in general. Encourage companies who are excited about diversity to partner with WIE (and therefore IEEE) at a local, regional and national level Example: Sensata –WIE ILC partner, three time IEEE WIE R1/R2 Forum partner, and now want to do a talk in Boston – win Win WIN Amazon Lab126 – potential IEEE WIE R1/R2 Forum patron, interested in hosting a Boston event as well in Sunnyvale, CA …….win Win WIN!!!
