Ch. 3 Energy. Energy is the ability to do work or effect change. Energy can be measured in joules, J. Many different forms of energy exist: Electrical.
THE ABILITY TO DO WORK Energy. Cells use energy for: Movement  Muscles, flagella wiggling Making and breaking chemical bonds.  Joining A.A. into protein.
Energy. Today we will: 1.Define energy, work and the principle of conservation of energy 1.List different forms of energy transfer 2.Name units related.
Work done is the energy transferred when a force moves an object over a distance. Since work is energy transferred, the unit for work is the joule (J).

A force is applied – pushing the block Work, Force and Energy A force is applied – pushing the block The block has moved this distance – this is an indication of the work done

Car drives along long straight road Work, Force and Energy Car drives along long straight road Petrol tank is supply of ______ to do work Engine provides _____ making car move forward Petrol tank now has less ______ as some of it has been used by the engine to provide the ______ and to do ______ Car has moved along the road so _______ has been done

Energy Transfer Diagrams

What does the word efficient mean? This is the most efficient car I have for sale at my garage What does the word efficient mean? This new light bulb is 5 times more efficient than the old type!

Look at these two light bulbs and calculate the efficiency Energy Saving Light Bulb Energy in = 15 Joules. Useful light energy = 10 Joules. Wasted heat energy = 5 Joules Cost – 3 Euros Lifespan – 4000 hours Filament Light Bulb Energy in = 100 Joules. Useful light energy = 10 Joules. Wasted heat energy = 90 Joules Cost – 1 Euro Lifespan – 800 hours

Question Describe why it is better to use energy saving light bulbs than filament light bulbs Your answer should include: What efficiency, wasted energy and useful energy are Energy transfer diagrams (including an indication of what is useful and what is wasted) Efficiency calculations Lifespan and cost factors Good use of English, spelling, punctuation and grammar

Sankey Diagrams Draw a Sankey diagram to represent an appliance that produces 60 joules of useful heat energy from every 100 joules of chemical energy it receives, with 40 joules being lost as wasted light energy

Analysing Energy in Food Procedure: Set up the equipment as shown at the front. Measure 100mL of water and put it in the can Take the temperature of the water Weigh an almond As shown by your teacher, light the almond and use it to heat the can (in the fume cupboard) When the almond has finished burning, take the temperature of the water again. Tasks: Draw a diagram of the apparatus you used Calculate the temperature change Divide the temperature change by the mass of the almond. This gives the temperature change for one gram of almonds. Multiply your answer to part c by 100 to get the temperature change for 100 grams of almonds. Take your answer to part d and multiply it by 4.18 and then by 100. This gives the energy in joules released by 100 grams of almonds Divide your answer to part e by 1000 to convert it to kilojoules. Compare your answer to the amount of energy on the packet and discuss why or why not they are different

What ingredients go into this sandwich? Where do these ingredients come from? As it is food, it contains energy for our bodies. But…where did the energy come from?
