The beginning… Did not play a major role during its colonial period Its exports were less significant than its competitors Empahisized internal development Issued the Monroe Doctrine – warning Europe from meddling in their business Created a new political system Extended the US past the Mississippi

Civil War 1861-1865 Spurred by differences between the north and south Northern victory – slavery and oppression continued Accelerated industrialization A railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific Agriculture mechanized
