Monologue Assignment Lord of the Flies

What is a monologue? A monologue is an oral composition in which only one person speaks: any speech or narrative presented by one person; a soliloquy.

What is the purpose of a monologue? It reveals the innermost thoughts/emotions/feelings of a character. We the audience, get a sneak peak into the characters (true colours) and learn who he or she truly is.

For Example… A character (we’ll call him Cedric) may seem reliable, normal, dependable, and an honest neighbour. However, through the use of a monologue, Cedric could reveal to the audience that he is a the serial cat hunter that gets a huge thrill from stealing cats from neighbours at night. Through his monologue, the audience has learned a whole lot more about his character.

His monologue might sound like this… Cedric’s Temptation I can feel the temptation coming on I wish I could control this urge! It takes every once of my being to resist this. It’s just that….that I adore cats! I can’t get enough of their soft, fluffy fur, their cuddly little paws, and the way they purr when I pick them up. I know it’s wrong to steal them, because, because…. Well, they just don’t belong to me, but I just can’t help it!! What would the neighbors think if they knew it was me? What would they do to me? Hang me? Arrest me? Charge me with cat napping? Oh God! I need help! But, help me no one can. I must voyage on in secret silence… In the dark, and on my own….all alone. All alone. Like the last timbit left in the box… Secretly….quietly….no one must know…. Here kitty kitty….. Here kitty kitty

What conclusions can you now draw about Cedric’s character from his monologue?

Conclusions: This guy is strange! He secretly loves to steal cats at night His morals show that he knows what he’s doing is wrong He recognizes that he needs help It appears to be some kind of odd addiction he is secretly suffering from He is worried about the consequences if found out He will continue his same pattern of cat napping

Let’s watch some monologues!

Your Assignment: You will write a monologue based on one of the characters in LOTF. Consider what they have been through, what they look like, things they have said, done. You will then film your monologue and hand it in. There will be class time to write your monologue and to film it. DUE MONDAY, OCTOBER 21st!
