African Origins One of the many traditions in Africa were cornrow braids. This might seem like a tread that started around a hundred years ago, but it is actually quite an old trick, because you can see these braids on agent statues. These braids were actually made 500 B.C. People say that this is because the people who made these braids, love their hair and try to pay a lot of care and attention to it.

Middle Passage I may be a little off in this, but according to the website, people who do these braids to keep a hold on to their tradition, because people would try and strip them from it. This photo is actually from the website: http://csdt.rpi.edu/african/CORNRO W_CURVES/culture/middle.passage. htm

Civil War to Civil Rights Once the Civil war was over, they started to straighten their hair instead of putting it in cornrow braids. They actually discovered many ways to straighten hair without giving any damage to your hair, so then straightening hair became a new trend.

Hip Hop Cornrow braids became popular again once afros became a thing. Then soon with a television appearance of Nigerian braids, and people soon began to become more interested in the culture, and how they would do their braids.
