Take a look… Topic Sentence: Australia is the best place to visit for vacation. Why? How does someone know that? Australia is home to some of the most unique wildlife in the world. Narrow in on ONE unique animal in wildlife. Interesting animals such as kangaroos, koala bears, and the duck-billed platypus can be found only in Australia. Now, a detail about the duck-billed platypus. The duck-billed platypus is not only one of the only egg laying mammals, but it also is venomous! Now, relate back to the topic sentence. Because of the chance to see animals such as the duck- billed platypus that can only be found in Australia, visiting this country can expose you to things you would never be able to see otherwise.

Warm up 12/4/14 Objective: Evaluate and revise thesis and introduction of expository essay. Warm up: Write your thesis statement and power sentence for your essay on a sheet of notebook paper. Now ask yourself: Thesis: Does it answer YES or NO? Did you provide a reason for your choice? Power Sentence: Does it connect your example to your thesis?

Depth Charging 1. Start with the statement that you want to build on, in this case the topic sentence. You need to address the character, the book, and relate these to the prompt. “In Fahrenheit 451, (character’s name) does/does not follow the crowd because...”

2.Circle/underline the most important part of the statement that you want to go into more detail about. Write another sentence that goes into more detail about the one before it. For instance, if you claimed that Millie does follow the crowd, how do you know this?

3. Circle/underline a word or phrase that you can build on from that sentence and do the same thing – ADD detail. Tell more of that character’s story – relate it back to if they followed the crowd or not. VARY your word choice.

4. Repeat the process until you have successfully argued/proven your point in the topic sentence and use the last sentence to tie the paragraph back to the topic sentence. You should aim for 5-6 solid sentences.

Thesis statement Answers the prompt. “Write an essay explaining if it is ever okay to follow the crowd.” Ask yourself, did the character I chose follow the crowd, or not? WHAT did he or she gain from this?

“It is okay to follow the crowd/not follow the crowd if/when…” Finish the statement with your ideas!
