Basics Persuasive Research Paper – Thesis Statement Write a single sentence that expresses your opinion on your limited topic. A POSITION STATEMENT The reader needs to know early in your paper (first paragraph) where you stand on the issue being discussed.
Stating your position… You have to state your position as a fact. That means leaving out I, Me, My etc. Thesis Statements should NEVER start with: I believe I think In my opinion I will tell you about JUST SAY WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY AND MOVE ON!
Examples- Which is best? 1. Maybe changing the day on which school dances are held would increase attendance. 2. Something needs to be done about school dances to increase attendance. 3. For the next two months, school dances should be held on Saturday night instead of Friday night to see if this increases attendance.
Examples- Which is best? 1. Reality shows should be taken off the air because I feel dumber for watching them. 2. Due to its inability to accurately portray reality, reality TV shows should be taken off the air and more educational shows should be put in their spots. 3. I think reality TV shows are possibly corrupting the youth of America.
Examples- Which is best? 1. Due to its increased popularity and wide audience base, Grey’s Anatomy should be aired each night on a year-round schedule. 2. Because Ms. Flesch loves the show, Grey’s Anatomy should be aired each night at 9pm so she can watch it before she goes to bed. 3. Grey’s Anatomy should be aired each night.
