Imply: when the writer suggests things but doesn’t specifically say. Critical thinking: How is this different to 'infer'? What does this image imply this character is thinking or feeling? Answer – The author ‘implies’ and the audience ‘infers’ which parts of the image suggest this?

1 minute tasks For each of the topics below, choose which side you agree with, and then write 1-2 sentences about how you would begin. The aim is to imply what you think, rather than state it outright. You have to suggest to the reader your thoughts in an interesting way. For example... Topic – Summer is better than Winter / Winter is better than Summer Don’t start with “I love summer, it’s the best. So much better than winter”. This gives it away and is too obvious. Instead perhaps start with “Imagine yourself on the beach, the glorious warmth of the sun on your skin, listening to the relaxing sounds of the waves crashing on the shore. It’s where you’d rather be when it’s less than 10 degrees outside and your nose feels like sandpaper from tissue use” Straight away, I can tell which side of the topic you agree with, without you having to say so, plus it’s way more interesting to read.

Why is today’s lesson important? When we do persuasive writing, it’s important to be able to engage your reader and take them on a journey with you, so that by the end of your writing you have them convinced. Implying ideas in a subtle way can help you do this. We will be focusing on this skill in our Assessment Task this term.
