What is poetry? Poetry is a type of writing Uses words Intense focus on expression of feelings or ideas Not just feelings Uses distinctive rhythm or style Sounds of words, syllables, emphasis

Key Terms Writer – person that wrote the poem Speaker – “narrator” of the poem Line – one line of poetry Stanza – “paragraph” of poem

Patterns Rhythm – the pattern of emphasis on the words Rhyme – repeated end sounds of words Alliteration – repeated beginning sound of word Consonance – repeated consonant sound in words Assonance – repeated vowel sound in words
