Familiar Places: What are some places that are familiar to you? Georgia Sandy Springs Sandy Springs Charter Middle School Do these names tell you about the places they represent?

Name of Placed can Change Can you think of any places whose names have changed? Soviet Union Sandy Springs CHARTER Middle School Atlanta/Marthasville In 1843 the town was named Marthasville in honor of the daughter of former Governor Wilson Lumpkin

Toponyms The names of places are called toponyms People feel strongly about the names of the places they live. I’m new to SSCMS. What if I come in and colonize this school. I may decide to change the name Lily, Louie, Cookie & Zuzu Middle School

Colonization How do you feel about the name change of your school? How was the name change influenced by colonization?

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe Formerly known as Rhodesia. Named for the English explorer who colonized it, Cecil Rhodes Current name, Zimbabwe, is from the original Bantu language of the indigenous people and means “sacred house”. Dwelling place of a chief,” and “a great stone building.” How does this information affect your perceptions of the country?

Why Was Cecil There? Cecil Rhodes became rich from the Kimberly diamond fields which produced 90% of the world's diamonds at the time.

Benefits of Colonial Rule on Africa People’s lives improved because hospitals and schools were built. As a result, literacy rates improved and people lived longer. Modern technology became available African products such as diamonds and salt became valued all across the world.

Negative effects of Colonial Rule on Africa Expansion was done with very little regard for the native people living there. Colonizers did not take into consideration existing geographic or cultural boundaries. Populations that had earlier identified themselves as distinct, because of their cultural, ethnic, and/or religious heritage, had to unify. The new colonial territories which had many ethnicities, cultures and religions were often controlled through violence. Many people were denied their political, economic, social, and human rights. Discrimination: Imperialist laws distributed resources unequally Didn't allow democratic governments Prohibited participation in decisions Westerners took advantage of Africa's resources and denied Africans government jobs in their own country.

Colonizers were not fair

Colonizers Wanted African Resources

The people who were colonized

Taking on the role the colonizers ask of them.

What would it feel like? Write a paragraph from the view of a European who came in and colonized Africa and from the view of an indigenous person of Africa whose life was changed by colonization. How do you feel…happy or sad? Is your life better or worse? What do you have now that you didn’t have before? Was anything taken from you? How has this affected your family?
