2015 Iditarod Tres E.

Introduction The Iditarod started when 2 children in Nome Alaska got very sick with the disease called Diphtheria. A group of mushers had a relay race, to get the medicine to the children. That is how the Iditarod started.

Musher Gerald Sousa Bib number: 44 Born in California Lives in Alaska 54 years old

Dogs Most mushers use Siberian Huskies because they are half husky and half wolf. Most mushers have 16 dogs when they start the Iditarod All the mushers have to put booties on the dogs so their feet don’t get cut. Some dogs wear little jackets.

Routes & Checkpoints This year the route was changed because in Anchorage, Alaska there was not enough snow to start so they had to start the race in Fairbanks, Alaska that is how the route was different. Also, there are 19 checkpoints.

Awards There are many awards. Three of them are the Anchorage Chrysler Dodge truck award which the winner was Dallas Seavey. Also, there is a Red Lantern award and the winner was Marcelle Fressineau. Finally, there is the Sprite of Alaska award and the winner was Sonny Lindner.
