1753-1760 What Happened? Importance Kamehameha was born in Kohala on the island of Hawaii. Kamehameha was the person who wanted unification, he led the unification of the Hawaiian islands.

1780 What Happened? Importance Kamehameha was put in charge and given the responsibility of the family’s war god: Kuka’ilimoku The war god was a symbol of power and since he was in charge of the war god he got all of its power.

1782 What Happened? Importance Kalani’opu’u died, which led to civil war on the island of Hawaii where Kiwala’o was killed. This was the start of unification because Kamehameha killed his cousin which gave him more power and showed the people he would not let anything get in this goal.

1791 What Happened? Importance Kamehameha killed his cousin Keoua by tricking him, then sacrificed him. This gave him even more mana or power because killing his cousin made the people more afraid of him.

1794 What Happened? Importance Kahekili died and split up the 4 islands he ruled between Kalanikupule and Ka’eo. They battled and Ka’eo was killed by Kalaniupule, leaving him ruler of the four islands. This made Kamehameha’s goal of uniting the islands easier because he only had to fight against Kalaniupule.

1795 What Happened? Importance The battle of Nu’uanu, Kamehameha fights against Kalaniupule. But Kalaniupule escapes and is later found and sacrificed. This brings all islands exept Kaua’i and Ni’ihau under Kamehameha’s control.

1796 What Happened? Importance Kamehameha set forth to conquer Kaua’i, but does not fight because there was a storm. Kamehameha is on his way to take leadership of all islands.

1797 What Happened? Importance Kamehameha made the “Law of the Splintered paddle.” This was the first law made by a chief. It made Kamehameha a ruler because he is helping the people and showing he cares.

1810 What Happened? Importance Kamehameha made an agreement with Kaumuali’i that once he dies Kamehameha will be in control of his islands. This is important because Kamehameha finally unites all of the Hawaiian islands with out any more wars.

1811 What Happened? Importance Kamehameha set forth on a tour of his kingdom. Kamehameha is showing that he is concerned with his people. He is making sure that everything is working and started his own government.

Kalaniopu’u Relationship Importance Kamehameha’s uncle When Kamehameha’s father died, Kalaniopu’u took care of him. He got Kamehameha a teacher; Kekuhaupi’o. He also gave Kamehameha the responsibility of the family war god.

Kekuhaupi’o Relationship Importance Kamehameha’s teacher from the age twelve and companion Kekuhaupi’o taught Kamehameha the rules of warfare

Kiwala’o Relationship Importance Kamehameha’s dad’s brother is Kiwala’o’s dad. Kiwala’o is his cousin. Kamehameha defeated Kiwala’o in a battle which was the first step in unification because he gained control of Kiwala’s land.

Keoua Relationship Importance Kamehameha’s cousin because he was Kiwala’o’s half brother, he was also Kamehameha’s enemy. Kamehameha used strategy and told Keoua that they were going to “talk peace” but when Keoua arrived he was killed. This gave Kamehameha more mana and power.

Kahekili Relationship Importance He was Kamehameha’s enemy and possibly Kamehameha’s father Kahekili died of old age and his land were divided between Kaheliki’s half brother and son

Kalanikupule Relationship Importance He is possibly Kamehameha’s half brother. He was also the ruler of Maui, Lana’I, Moloka’I and Oahu. He was Kamehameha’s enemy. He fought Kamehameha in the battle of Nu’uanu and lost giving Kamehameha control of all the islands except Kauai and Ni’ihau His body was sacrificed after found hidden in the forest. Made it easier for Kamehameha by killing his uncle.

Kaumuali’i Relationship Importance Ruler of Kauai and Ni’ihau Becomes governor of Kauai and Ni’ihau after surrendering to Kamehameha Enemy/opponent Realized his army wasn’t strong enough to beat Kamehameha. Surrendered to Kamehameha- making him ruler of all the islands completing the unification.

Foreign Advisors Description Importance Foreign advisors are people from other lands that help make decisions. The foreign advisors that worked for Kamehameha are John Young and Isaac Davis. John Young and Isaac Davis introduced weapons and strategies to Kamehameha to help him rule the Hawaiian islands.

Weaponry Description Importance New weaponry was introduced to Kamehameha such guns, cannons and swords. The new weaponry gave Kamehameha an advantage in unifying the Hawaiian Islands. This gave Kamehameha a stronger leader and chief.

Stratagies Description Importance War Strategies were introduced to Kamehameha by John Young and Isaac Davis. The strategies provided Kamehameha with new ways to fight against his enemies. Not telling your enemy you’re going to fight is a big advantage because they would not have time to prepare for war.
