A Training Workshop Media Relations 101

What is media relations? Involves working with the media for the purpose of informing the public of an organization’s mission, policies, and practices in a positive, consistent, and credible manner A relationship that a company or organization develops with journalists Johnston Community College

What is the goal? To maximize an organization’s positive publicity in the media without paying for it To raise public awareness of a company or organization and its product or services Johnston Community College

How do you do it? Cultivate relationships with reporters and editors Respond to media calls promptly Use news releases and social media posts to tell your organization’s story Pitch a major story to a select journalist Johnston Community College

Why is it important? Can influence political decision making Can raise an organization’s profile, which could have an impact on funding and philanthropy Johnston Community College

What is media relations at JCC? The media relations and public information officer is the liaison between the media and the college. Policy 1.28 is the administrative operations policy concerning media relations Johnston Community College

What is AOM 1.28? The Institutional Effectiveness Division is the initial point of contact for public information, interview, and photography requests from the media. Contact the PIO by phone or e-mail if contacted by a reporter. The PIO coordinates the appropriate spokesperson for the college. Johnston Community College
