Laboratory Safety

Before Lab Investigation Before a lab investigation, you must prepare everything you need. Read over the directions and make sure you have everything. Before you start you should ask a teacher/an adult to help if you need any. Sometimes, there are safety symbols, safety symbols tell you whether anything is dangerous or not. If there’s anything that might harm your eyes, put on safety goggles. If there is anything harmful to your skin, wear an apron, tie your hair back, and wear closed toe shoes. If you are handling hot objects, wear heat resistant gloves.

During Lab Investigation During the lab investigation, you have to make sure you follow everything in order. If you don’t, an accident might happen. If an accident does happen, you should clean it up right away, or tell an adult. If you are having trouble following directions/taking measurements ask someone for help. If something happens and a dangerous chemical gets on you, clean it off right away, if it’s really bad seek medical attention. Write about your experiment on a sheet of paper, so you know your results.

After Lab investigation After the lab investigation, you should put away everything you used. If anything got really messy, clean it before putting it away. Throw away anything that needs to be thrown away.

Safety Symbols This symbol is the fire hazard symbol. It is meant to warn you that something is very flammable, to reduce the destruction caused by fire.

Safety Symbols This symbol is the radiation hazard symbol. It is meant to warn people to stay away from the area to protect them from being exposed to radiation.

Safety Symbols This symbol is the explosive hazard symbol. This symbol means that something could explode easily.

How to Prepare for a Field Study To prepare for a field study you have to gather anything you might need to go outside. For example, a rain coat and rain boots for if it’s raining. While outside, you have to be aware of your surroundings. Make sure there are no dangerous animals or plants in your area. Bringing gloves would be a good idea too. If there’s an accident, like a snake biting you, tell an adult right away.
