Molecular Bonding

Learning Goal I will be able to form and name molecular compounds.

Why Bond!? Atoms like to have 8 electrons in their outer ring. Stable octet

Molecular Bonding Happens between two non-metals. Involves the sharing of electrons. The sharing of electrons is called a covalent bond.

Draw the Lewis Dot diagram and name the molecule formed by Nitrogen and Hydrogen. Draw the Lewis Dot diagram and name the molecule formed by Carbon and Hydrogen.

Naming Covalent Compounds You write the name of the first element and the second element second element s ending is changed to ’s ending is changed to “-ide” We use prefixes to state the number of each element present (never put “mono” on the first element) One = mono- Two = di- Three = tri- Four = tetra- Five = penta

Example Provide names for the following compounds: N2O4 H2O CO2

Example Provide formulas for the following names: nitrogen trihydride phosphorus pentaoxide dicarbon tetraoxide

Practice Set Write Names Write Formulas antimony tribromide hexaboron monosilicide chlorine dioxide hydrogen monoiodide iodine pentafluoride dinitrogen trioxide sulfur hexafluoride phosphorus triiodide P4S5 NO2 SeF6 Si2Br6 SCl4 CH4 B2Si NF3

Learning Goal Revisited I will be able to form and name molecular compounds.

Building Molecules Activity Pg 265 will be helpful for common names and usages
