Figure 1 Mechanism of Satellite Cell Communication to Muscle Fibrogenic Cells to Mediate ECM Remodeling in Response to Hypertrophic Stimulus Fry et al. (2016) propose that satellite cell-mediated exosomal delivery of miR-206 to muscle fibrogenic cells regulates collagen synthesis. Satellite cells are activated in response to a hypertrophic stimulus, inducing the release of exosomes containing miR-206. miR-206 is delivered to the recipient muscle fibrogenic cells where it inhibits Rrbp1, which attenuates collagen synthesis and ECM deposition and permits proper muscle remodeling (top panel). In the absence of satellite cells, miR-206 is not delivered to fibrogenic cells to negatively regulate Rrbp1, which results in increased collagen synthesis and excess ECM deposition surrounding the myofibers, inhibiting hypertrophy (bottom panel).
