Biblical Contentment Lesson 3 The Source of Contentment By Melissa Kruger

What are some characteristics of God that help you to trust in the Lord and find contentment?

“Whatever we trust in is Remember: “Whatever we trust in is the source of our joy” Melissa Kruger

1. God is Omniscient – He Knows EVERYTHING

O Lord, you have searched me and known me O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. —Psalm 139:1–4

What does this passage say to us about God’s knowledge What does this passage say to us about God’s knowledge? Why is it important?

Do we trust God to arrange our lives differently than others?

Dr. J. I. Packer comments “This is where most of us go astray Dr. J. I. Packer comments “This is where most of us go astray. Our thoughts of God are not great enough; we fail to reckon with the reality of His limitless wisdom and power. Because we are limited and weak, we imagine that at some points God is too. We think of God as too much like what we are. Put this mistake right, says God; learn to acknowledge the full majesty of your incomparable God and Savior.”

2. God is Omnipresent – He is EVERYWHERE

Where can I go to escape your Spirit Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. 9 If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, 10 even there your hand will lead me; your right hand will hold on to me. Psalm 139:7-10

Is it comforting or frightening that God is everywhere you are? (This depends on your view of God)

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

3. God is our self-sufficient creator

For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. Psalm 139:13

For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well.

15 My bones were not hidden from you when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began. Psalm 139:13-16

For who has known the mind of the Lord. Or who has been His counselor For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor? 35 Or who has ever first given to Him, and has to be repaid? 36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. Romans 11:34-36

4. God is Omnipotent – He is ALL powerful

He made the earth by his power, established the world by his wisdom, and spread out the heavens by his understanding. 13 When he thunders, the waters in the heavens are in turmoil, and he causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth.

He makes lightning for the rain and brings the wind from his storehouses. Jeremiah 10:12-13

Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth; sing praise to the Lord, 33 to him who rides in the ancient, highest heavens. Look, he thunders with his powerful voice! 34 Ascribe power to God. His majesty is over Israel, his power is among the clouds.

35 God, you are awe-inspiring in your sanctuaries 35 God, you are awe-inspiring in your sanctuaries. The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God! Psalm 68:32-35

His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

4 By these he has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire. 2 Peter 1:3-4

Does God being Omnipotent change our thinking about Philippians 4:13?

5. God is GOOD

Good – Not happiness is there a difference? 28 We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 Good – Not happiness is there a difference?

Think of This: God is all powerful and yet all Good Think of This: God is all powerful and yet all Good? Can We grasp this fully?

“If there is one single molecule in this universe running around loose, totally free of God’s sovereignty, then we have no guarantee that a single promise of God will ever be fulfilled.” RC Sproul

6. God is JUST

For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality. Colossians 3:25 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

“Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know.

23 Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.

24 God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death. Acts 2:22-24

The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

“Christ’s death on the cross allowed God to be both Just and the Justifier” Melissa Kruger
