Starter Identify which response to predation is each organism displaying? 2. 2. 3.

11-2: Species Interactions (competition)

Competition Occurs when two organisms fight for the same limited resources (2 types)

Competition 1. Intraspecific competition - competition between organisms of same species Example: Crabs fighting for mates

Competition 2. Interspecific Competition- competition between different species Example: Different types of barnacles compete for rock space

Interspecific competition LEADS TO…. Competitive exclusion- when one species outcompetes the other for the niche.  

Interspecific competition LEADS TO…. Competitive exclusion- when one species outcompetes the other for the niche.     Two outcomes: Other species will be pushed into another niche (niche partitioning) OR go extinct    

  niche partitioning- dividing of niche by two competing species (ex: different bird species partitioning a tree)
