P REGNANCY F ACTS AND M YTHS Having sex with your cloths on can get you pregnant? Kissing your partner can result in pregnancy? Oral sex can not get you pregnant? Birth controls pills can prevent you from having a baby? If a girl never got her period and had sexual intercourse, she cannot get pregnant? Using condoms can prevent STDS and STIs?

P OVERTY AND T EEN P REGNANCY Young women from low income families are getting pregnant at a higher rate than those from middle and upper income families. Throughout the developed world, teenage pregnancy is more common among young people who have been disadvantaged in childhood and have low expectations of education or the job market. This shows you that youth living in poverty have a teen pregnancy rate which is five times the average.

P OVERTY C ONTINUE... It is more harder for a teenage child to raise her baby. Harder for the mother to provide necessities for her and her baby. Hard to provide nutritional care for her baby. Hard to pay a babysitter when the mother needs a break. There are children who are

L OVE Growing up in a family without an adequate amount of love or a father figure could also be one of the causes of teenage pregnancy; an adolescent girl will fall prey to the attentions of an older man in the hopes of receiving affection. Most girls are pressured by their boyfriends into having sex because they believe this will make their boyfriends love them more.

T EEN FACTS Only half the girls who become pregnant in high school graduate, and just 3% have achieved a college degree by age percent feel that teens should not be sexually active. 72 percent agreed that teens that are sexually active should have access to birth control. 73 percent feel that being a virgin should not be embarrassing 58 percent feel that high-school age teens should not be sexually active Fewer than one half of teens in high school have had sex 67 percent of teens who have had sex wish that they had waited (60 percent of boys and 77 percent of girls).

A BORTIONS Over 50% of abortions performed annually are on women under the age of 25 with the ages of 18 and 19 accounting for the highest number performed. There are currently twenty-one states that require parental permission for a teen abortion and eighteen states that do not. There are also fourteen states that require a parental notification before performance of an abortion on a minor. The notification law requires that parents be notified, but permission of a parent is not necessary to go ahead with the procedure.

C OMPLICATIONS Teenagers who have abortions can experience a wide range of possible physical complications. During an abortion, a healthcare provider may accidentally pierce a teen's cervix with surgical instruments causing massive bleeding, major surgery and in some cases a hysterectomy. In addition, a teenager's uterine lining may be severely scared as a result of the incorrect use of suction equipment and surgical instruments making it difficult for the teen to have children later in life.
