What is Instructional Scaffolding? “Instructional scaffolding is a process through which a teacher adds supports for students in order to enhance learning and aid in the mastery of tasks. The teacher does this by systematically building on students’ experiences and knowledge as they are learning new skills. …..these supports are temporary and adjustable. As students master the assigned tasks, the supports are gradually removed.” (IRIS Center: https://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/module/sca/cresource/q1/p01/) Faculty Center for Professional Development R2Z

Scaffolding in Engineering Deductive or Inductive teaching and learning Connections to students’ interests, prior knowledge and experiences Learn by Doing Problem-based or project-based learning Chunk and Chew Active learning(e.g. group discussion, ConcepTest)
Scaffolding in Communication Assignments: building blocks, pair/share feedback, small group Examples: common knowledge, as an assignment, student driven Learning Environment: purposeful, varied & frequent Faculty Center for Professional Development R2Z
