What is science?

Science A way of learning about the world and the knowledge gained from it. Add this word to Glossary in the back of your ISN.

Observe To use one or more of your senses to gather information. Senses include: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Add this word to Glossary in the back of your ISN.

We infer! (make meaning or reasoning of what we observe) Inference Explanation or interpretation of the things you have observed. What you THINK is happening! Add this word to Glossary in the back of your ISN.

Observations Inference Picture is of a black and brown puppy and a white and grey kitten on a brown fluffy cushion. The puppy likes the kitten and the kitten is annoyed by the puppy. The puppy is standing and has his nose on the kitten’s face. The kitten and the puppy live together. The kitten is leaning the opposite direction away from the puppy. The puppy is happy and the kitten is not.

Observations Inference Find your Veggie Pizza Partner and discuss observations and inferences you make about this picture? Observations Inference

Add these words to Glossary in the back of your ISN.

Pg. 7R

Is Observation and Inference similar to any of the parts of CER? Discuss with your thin crust pizza partner and be prepared to share out.

Boy and Lake Page 8R Place an ‘I’ before the statements that are inferences and an ‘O’ before the statements that are observations. The boy is in the water. The weather is cold. The tree branch is broken. If the boy crawled out of the water, the goat would kick him. The boy fell off the branch A goat is standing by the pond. The branch will fall on the boy’s head. The boy fell of the rocks. There is a sailboat in the water. The sailboat belongs to the boy. The goat will soon leave the pond. The tree by the pond has no leaves on it. The tree by the pond is dead. If it rains, leaves will grow on the tree. The goat kicked the boy into the pond.

Question: What happened in this picture? Fill in the CER chart by turning the observations and inferences into a Claim Evidence and Reasoning. Question: What happened in this picture? (Work with hawaiian pizza partner) Claim I claim Evidence Specific data that supports the claim. The data needs to be appropriate and sufficient to support the claim. In the image you can see Reasoning A justification that links the claim and evidence. It shows why the data count as evidence by using appropriate and sufficient scientific/social science principles.

Sample CER 8R Claim: I claim the boy fell from the broken branch on the dead tree while trying to retrieve his toy sailboat. Evidence: In the image you can see that the tree branch is broken and the boy is in the water in a position directly below the branch. The boy in the water is also wearing a long sleeved shirt. There is a sailboat toy in the water and the tree appears to have no leaves. There is a goat standing near the water. Reasoning: No leaves on the tree may indicate that the tree is dead. This would mean that the branch would be very weak since leaves provide the tree with energy. The boy was playing with his sail boat near the pond and climbed the tree to get away from the goat. The weight of the boy and the force from the pull of gravity caused the dead branch to break and he fell into the water. The waves that were made after the boy fell into the water, pushed the sailboat away from him. Because he is wearing a long sleeved shirt, he most likely wasn’t planning on getting into the water.

Girl and Bike pg.8L Work as a group and make a list of observations and inferences from this image.

Work as a group and write a CER for this Image.

Levels of Complexity for CER pg. 9L Basic Understanding (4/5) Claim I claim the heavier car moves faster Evidence The toy car with extra weights rolled down the ramp in 4 seconds. The car without the weights took 6 seconds. Reasoning The heavier car was pulled down the ramp by gravity faster than the lighter car.

Levels of Complexity for CER Good Understanding (5/5) Claim Heavier objects roll down ramps faster because of gravity’s pull. Evidence The toy car weighing 100g averaged 4 seconds to roll down the ramp after 3 trials. The toy car weighing 50g averaged 6 seconds to roll down the ramp after 3 trials. The heavier car went 50% faster. Reasoning The force of gravity’s pull is related to the mass of an object, so the heavier car was pulled down the ramp faster than the lighter car.

Levels of Complexity for CER What does the 5/5 include that the 4/5 does not? Work with your group to explain. Claim Evidence Reasoning

Claim Evidence Reasoning Writing Support PG. 9R Claim: (an answer to the question or statement about the results of an investigation). Should be one sentence answer to the question/results of the investigation. “It is claimed that ________________________” “Based on evidence, it is claimed that ___________” “Evidence shows that _________happened” Evidence: (Examples of data that support the claim; e.g. observations, numerical data, information from reading, models) “From the data, it is observed that _____________” “The evidence is/shows ______________” “The data shows that ________________” “The evidence suggest that ________” Reasoning: (Describe how or why the evidence supports the claim) “In addition to evidence from _______, the evidence from _______ also shows that ____” “Reviewing evidence from __________, the data clearly shows that ______ because_” “The evidence displays _________________ because __________________. “The evidence suggest that _______________” “_____________ happened because _____ as shown by the evidence from ____” Example of flow if you were to write it in a paragraph: “State claim. (see sentence starters above). State first piece of evidence and reasoning. (for example . . . The first piece of evidence from the data shows . . . . This shows that. . State second evidence and reasoning. Second, the evidence shows ____ which means. . . State third piece of evidence and reasoning. Finally _____ shows _______ because. . . Write a conclusion. Therefore, -_________.
