Scientific Method A Review

What is the effect on heart rate after one minute of exercise?

Past experience, Research … What term is used to describe our “educated guess” or predict an answer to the question about the effect of exercise on heart –rate? Hypothesis What would you use to develop a hypothesis in response to the question? Past experience, Research … Write a hypothesis for your title. (Remember use the “If/then”)

What is a controlled experiment? An experiment in which only one factor (variable) is changed by the scientist to see if it affects something else. Why is only one factor or “variable” changed in a controlled experiment? Because if the scientist alters more than one factor, how does he or she know what is having the effect?

What would be our control for the heart rate experiment? In most controlled experiment you have 3 Factors or variables that you must know. 1. Control variable – An unchanged variable in a controlled experiment. - This would be your standard, baseline or resting pattern that you will base your final results from. What would be our control for the heart rate experiment?

What is the independent variable in our investigation? 2.Independent Variable (Manipulated Variable) - is the one variable that is changed by the scientist What is the independent variable in our investigation?

3. Dependent Variable (Responding Variable) – is the response to the independent variable. What are different dependent variables that could be examined in our investigation?

Recording the data – before & after. How will we know whether the dependent variable has changed after a result of exercise? Recording the data – before & after. For your experiment – Write down what your: Independent variable is - Dependent variable is - Controlled variable is -

So now we need to make a list of what materials we are going to need. So Far we have covered… 1. A Title / Past experience 2. A Hypothesis 3. What our variables we will test for So now we need to make a list of what materials we are going to need.

How do you test for Heart rate? Practice taking your resting pulse rate. Record this!!!

Next, your protocol or step by step procedures on how to test your hypothesis - What are you going to make them do? - Can they do it for 1 minute? - What are jumping jacks?, push ups? sit ups? etc… not every one knows.

What is the effect on heart rate after one minute of exercise On a separate sheet of paper design the experiment for this problem and run the experiment. Your paper should include the following: Your name - Your title – Your Hypothesis – Your Independent and Dependent variable Your Protocol – (step by step) Your data – (remember graph or table works best) Your analysis & conclusion.
