Presentation transcript:

Research Map: Common mistakes Abbreviations on your paper: CS = Complete sentence. Your claim and each reason should be stated as complete sentences. In addition, if your textual evidence alone doesn’t express a complete thought, your set up needs to complete it. However, best case scenario is evidence that expresses a complete thought. NR = Not Responsive. On evidence, it doesn’t relate to the reason listed above. On a reason, it doesn’t relate to your claim. AC = Against your Claim. The reason/evidence is contrary to what your claim says, and therefore is counterproductive to your argument.

Research Map: Common mistakes Abbreviations on your paper: RW = Reword. An incomplete sentence, does not make sense, vague. Any number of possibilities here. R =Reasons. You did not include reason(s) in your thesis. Claim = You did not include claim in your thesis WC = word choice. You used a weak word or the wrong word for your sentence.

Research Map: Common mistakes Text that is underlined in the article is a link. Don’t underline it in your textual evidence “More” – the evidence you cited doesn’t give enough information. Words like “it” or “that” without any specific reference make evidence vague. The “it” or “that” need to be defined (you need more evidence for context) Vague – weak wording, not specific, pronoun usage

Research Map: Common mistakes Set-up – not written as complete thought. Does not give context to the article, to the speaker, or to the context of the evidence. Does not tell the reader “how” she should read/interpret the evidence. Evidence – jumping into middle of evidence/quote. Does not make sense! Often starting with a pronoun with no context Citation – must be (parenthetical) No comma between name and # No # given

Research Map: Common mistakes 1st and 2nd person! ARGH!!!!!! Contractions! REALLY????? Incomplete sentences and slashes/ WHAT?????? Not using quotation marks around evidence Lame. Spelling!
