What is History? Why bother to study history? Where is history? What is a “philosophy” of history? Describe the cyclical school. What is the main belief of the providential school? When was it most popular? Describe the progressive school. How did it reflect the new attitudes and beliefs of the 1700s? How did the problems of industrialization and capitalism challenge the beliefs of progressives?

How did Karl Marx affect the study of history How did Karl Marx affect the study of history? What would the Marxist school of history focus on? What are the main beliefs of the postmodernist school? What would a postmodernist think of the phrase, “The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.” (L.P. Hartley) How are positivism and historicism at odds with each other? Can a historian not have a progressive view of history and still be a historicist or positivist? What is historiography?

How can historiography lead to revisionism? What are some of the more traditional fields of historical study? What are some of the newer fields of study? How does the widening fields of historical inquiry reflect the changing makeup and values of society?
