Different Types of Government Subtitle

“Who Rules” Activity You have all been given an island to control. Who rules in your island? Your family? You? Your friends? Nobody? You have 5 min to create a form of government. Decide who rules and how will laws be enforced. Remember the 5 functions of government we discussed yesterday.

Results How many of you decided to rule the island yourselves? How many of you decided on having no government at all? How many of you decided to let the people in the island decide?

Rule by One Only one person has the power Could be a monarch Absolute monarch Could be a dictator In a monarchy, people are usually born into it In a dictatorship, power is forcibly taken away and one person is established as the ruling body

CFU What is the difference between a monarchy and a dictatorship?

Rule by the Few Could be an oligarchy or an aristocracy Aristocracy- usually connected to royal families through blood Oligarchy- rule by the privileged, like the rich

CFU How are oligarchies and aristocracies similar?

Rule by Many Democracy is a system in which the people hold the power to make the decisions “Demos”- people “Kratos”- power 2 kinds -> direct and representative

Direct Democracy Can be seen as Democracy in its purest form Individuals vote directly on proposed laws Maximizes political self- determination Tyranny of the majority? Ice cream dilemma

Representative Democracy The people elect representatives that voice their opinions This allows for minority groups to have their voices heard This is at the heart of the American political experience

Exit Ticket What are the 2 types of democracy? Why did the U.S. decide to adopt a representative democracy as opposed to a direct democracy?
