This Month in Gastroenterology Laura Harrell, Eugene B. Chang  Gastroenterology  Volume 130, Issue 7, Pages 1935-1937 (June 2006) DOI: 10.1053/j.gastro.2006.05.005 Copyright © 2006 American Gastroenterological Association Institute Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 Immunohistochemical staining of TRAIL expression (brown staining) in normal ileum is predominantly found in mature enterocytes. In active ileal sections of Crohn’s disease and colonic section of ulcerative colitis patients, TRAIL was markedly up-regulated in intestinal epithelial cells and extended to immature crypt cells. TRAIL expression is also increased in lamina propria cells. Figure 2 Data from 218 men in the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study. The data were adjusted for age and alcohol use. (A) Prevalence of NAFLD across tertiles of fitness, (B) prevalence of NAFLD across BMI categories of normal weight (18.5 kg·m2 ≤ BMI < 24.9 kg·m2), overweight (25.0 kg·m2 ≤ BMI < 29.9 kg·m2), and obese (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg·m2), and (C) NAFLD across tertiles of waist circumference. Numbers above the bars are the prevalence, and the error bars represent 95% confidence intervals. *Adjusted for age and alcohol use. Figure 3 Mean change from baseline in log10 HBV DNA by PCR assay through 48 weeks (on blinded treatment) in patients treated with entecavir 1.0 mg/day or lamivudine 100 mg/day. The mean change from baseline in HBV DNA was −5.11 log10 copies/mL for entecavir-treated patients and −0.48 log10 copies/mL for lamivudine-treated patients. Error bars represent the standard error of the mean. Figure 4 Proportion of patients who achieved ALT normalization (ALT ≤1.0 × ULN) through week 48. At week 48, 61% of entecavir-treated patients and 15% of lamivudine-treated patients had normal ALT levels. Error bars represent standard error of the mean. Figure 5 Detection of microvasculature in normal and IBD mucosa. The panels show brown immunohistochemical staining for CD31 and von Willebrand/factor VIII in the microvasculature of colonic mucosa and submucosa from histologically normal control, active UC, and active CD tissue.
