The awards were first given in 1929 at a special ceremony created for the awards, at the Roosevelt Hotel at Hollywood and Highland. Over the years that the award site and the categories have evolved and changed. Currently, the Academy Awards ceremony is televised live in more than 100 countries and is one of the oldest award ceremonies. Other award shows are based on this model. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has a voting membership of approximately 6000 members.
