God pronounced a curse on anyone who was hung on a tree.

“If anyone is found guilty of an offense deserving the death penalty and is executed, and you hang his body on a tree, you are not to leave his corpse on the tree overnight but are to bury him that day... Deuteronomy 21:22–23 CSB

for anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse ...for anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse. You must not defile the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. Deuteronomy 21:22–23 CSB

The curse was a foreshadow of the way mankind would be redeemed

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree... Galatians 3:13–14 CSB

The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:13–14 CSB

Dead and Buried

And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.” Genesis 2:16–17 CSB

Jesus is laying claim to the faithful who were awaiting the fulfillment of the promise.

But what does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower parts of the earth? The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, to fill all things. Ephesians 4:7–10 CSB
